Press Release: June 2, 2020

To Our Greatly Appreciated County Fair Friends,

It is with extreme sadness and a heavy heart to make the announcement that the Grundy County Fair scheduled for July 1 – 5, 2020 has been cancelled.

The unprecedented and continuing dynamic situation that our County, State, and Nation currently faces has given cause for the Fair Board of Directors to make the extremely difficult and emotional decision to cancel this year’s Fair event. With that decision, the 116th Grundy County Fair has now been rescheduled for June 30 – July 4, 2021.

The Grundy County Fair began in 1904 on the streets of Mazon with a colt show. Automobile racing on the horse track began at the Fair in 1926 and the Mazon Speed Bowl was built in 1947. In 1971, the Grundy County Fair relocated to Morris and this year would have marked the 50th year of racing at the Grundy County Speedway. Over the many years, tens of thousands of “Fair Goers” have enjoyed the finest agricultural and livestock exhibitions as well as the highly competitive racing events.

Our “County Fair” has occurred every year through World War I, World War II, the 1918 Spanish Flu, the Great Depression, the 1957 Asian Flu, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the 9/11/2001 Attacks, the 2003 SARS Pandemic as well as many other trials and tribulations throughout the past 116 years. Our “County Fair” will survive this situation.

The past six months have been extremely busy at the Fair. A highly motivated Fair Board and Speedway organization with a positive attitude has been established. Scheduling of both Fair and Speedway events were completed. Infrastructure repairs were identified and prioritized. Although limited funding was available, two major infrastructure repairs were initiated for 2020. The main entrance road has been repaved and the replacement of all the fairgrounds overhead lighting with LED lights has been completed. This includes the upgrade of the speedway lighting to LED. Repairs and upgrades to the restroom facilities and exhibition hall stage have been completed with the assistance of some very special volunteers.

The Grundy County Fair has grown through the years because of the hard work and dedication of many people. We would like to thank everyone for their commitment to our “County Fair”.

We are proud and honored to have provided good clean family fun and to have been a part of our great American history and look forward to the future, with the continued support of our community.

Our American Freedom Will Prevail . . .
